EHS Lead
Job Description
Our client, an established international pharmaceutical manufacturing company, is seeking an experienced Environment, Health & Safety (EHS) Lead to join its operations in Malta.
The successful candidate will be responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing the site's environmental, health, and safety policies, procedures, and programmes. The role focuses on ensuring compliance with Maltese legislation, promoting a proactive safety culture, and driving continuous improvement across the organisation.
Location: On-site – Hal Far
Responsibilities:
As an EHS Lead, your broad responsibilities will include but are not limited to:
Ensure compliance with Maltese environmental, health, and safety legislation, including OHSA regulations, ERA requirements, and applicable ATEX directives.
Act as the designated Competent Person under Maltese occupational health and safety legislation, including L.N. 36 of 2003 and L.N. 44 of 2002.
Lead site-wide EHS risk assessments, including hazardous substances (REACH/CLP), ATEX zoning, and process safety risks.
Develop and implement EHS strategies, policies, procedures, training programmes, and audits.
Promote a proactive safety culture by encouraging employee involvement, accountability, and open communication across all departments.
Work closely with management and operational teams to identify potential hazards, implement preventative measures, and improve workplace safety.
Lead EHS-related projects covering sustainability, waste management, energy efficiency, and emergency response planning.
Monitor EHS performance and drive continuous improvement initiatives across the manufacturing site.
Requirements:
MQF Level 6 qualification in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Sciences, Engineering, Chemistry, or a related discipline.
Diploma in Health and Safety or an equivalent qualification recognised by the Occupational Health and Safety Authority (OHSA Malta) for appointment as a Competent Person.
Previous experience in a similar EHS leadership position within the pharmaceutical or manufacturing industry.
Experience working in ATEX-regulated environments is highly desirable.
Knowledge of Maltese environmental, health, and safety legislation and regulatory requirements.
Certified auditor qualification or practical auditing experience in ISO 45001, ISO 14001, or similar standards would be considered an asset.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage employees and management at all levels.
Ability to influence workplace practices, promote accountability, and establish a culture of safety and continuous improvement.
