Tax Director
Job Description
Our client is seeking an experienced Tax Director to provide strategic leadership across its tax service line.
The successful candidate will oversee the delivery of tax compliance and advisory services, manage key client relationships and lead the continued development of the tax team. The role will also involve supporting the growth and profitability of the department, maintaining high technical standards and advising clients on complex Maltese and international tax matters.

Responsibilities:

Key Responsibilities
Provide strategic leadership and direction for the tax service line.
Ensure the department’s activities are aligned with the firm’s business objectives, growth strategy and client service standards.
Oversee the delivery of tax compliance and advisory services.
Maintain high standards of technical quality, risk management and client service.
Lead, coach and develop the tax team, promoting accountability, continuous learning and high performance.
Act as the principal contact and trusted advisor for key clients.
Provide strategic advice on complex local and international tax matters.
Oversee technically complex advisory projects and tax compliance engagements.
Identify and manage technical, regulatory and commercial risks.
Monitor developments in Maltese, EU and international tax legislation.
Assess the impact of legislative developments on clients, services and departmental strategy.
Represent clients in discussions and negotiations with tax authorities, regulators and other stakeholders.
Identify new business opportunities and expand existing client relationships.
Develop new tax services and commercial offerings.
Work with Partners, Directors and other departments to identify cross-selling opportunities and deliver integrated client solutions.
Establish departmental objectives, budgets, performance measures and resource plans.
Monitor revenue, utilisation, recoverability, budgeting and profitability.
Lead client proposals, presentations and business development meetings.
Represent the firm at industry events, conferences, seminars, webinars and professional associations.
Contribute to technical publications, articles, training sessions and speaking engagements.
Support the Tax Partner in developing and implementing the long-term strategy for the tax department.
Promote innovation and continuous improvement across the department.
Identify opportunities to improve efficiency, service quality and the overall client experience.
Requirements:
A professional qualification in accountancy or law.
At least five years of relevant tax experience.
Significant experience in a senior leadership or tax management position.
Strong technical knowledge of Maltese income tax legislation.
Knowledge of the Maltese tax payment and refund mechanism, fiscal unity, capital gains tax, notional interest deduction and double taxation relief.
Extensive knowledge of international tax principles and developments.
Knowledge of ATAD, the OECD Model Tax Convention, Pillar Two, transfer pricing, the Interest and Royalties Directive and the Parent-Subsidiary Directive.
Experience handling complex tax advisory matters, cross-border transactions, tax structuring, compliance and tax disputes.
Proven experience managing large client portfolios and high-value client relationships.
A commercial mindset with experience in business development, client retention and revenue growth.
Strong leadership, coaching and people-management skills.
Experience developing and managing high-performing teams.
Strong strategic planning, organisational and project-management capabilities.
Ability to make sound technical and commercial decisions in complex situations.
Excellent communication, negotiation and stakeholder-management skills.
Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
Ability to collaborate with other departments and deliver commercially focused client solutions.
Commitment to maintaining high professional and client service standards.
Excellent written and spoken English.
