Development Team Lead
Job Description
Our client is a fast-growing digital technology company seeking an experienced Development Team Lead to lead a small but expanding engineering team. Reporting directly to senior technology leadership, you will oversee software delivery, mentor developers, and help shape scalable technical solutions while remaining closely involved in architecture and engineering decisions.
Initially, you will manage a team of three Software Developers and one QA Engineer, with plans to expand the team as the business continues to grow.
Location: On site - Malta
Responsibilities:
As a Development Team Lead, your broad responsibilities will include but are not limited to:
Lead, mentor and support the software development team, encouraging technical excellence and continuous improvement.
Plan, prioritise and coordinate development work to ensure projects are delivered on time and to a high standard.
Collaborate closely with Product, Architecture, QA and DevOps teams throughout the software development lifecycle.
Participate in solution design, technical planning and architectural discussions for new and existing products.
Review code, promote development best practices and maintain high engineering standards.
Monitor application performance and contribute to the design of scalable, reliable and maintainable systems.
Support the investigation and resolution of production issues, ensuring stable releases and continuous service availability.
Identify opportunities to improve development processes, automation and overall engineering efficiency.
Assist with recruitment, onboarding and development of new team members as the engineering function grows.
Requirements:
Essential Skills
Strong commercial backend development experience using PHP and Node.js.
Solid understanding of RESTful API development and third-party integrations.
Excellent SQL knowledge and database optimisation techniques.
Experience designing scalable, high-performance backend systems.
Familiarity with caching technologies such as Redis or similar solutions.
Experience working with Docker and containerised applications.
Understanding of CI/CD pipelines and modern deployment practices.
Excellent leadership, communication and stakeholder management skills.
Essential Experience
Previous experience leading or managing software development teams.
Strong software engineering background within complex, high-traffic platforms.
Experience working in distributed, multi-system environments.
Proven track record of improving reliability, performance and scalability of production applications.
Comfortable working within structured Agile environments alongside Product, DevOps and Architecture teams.
Experience leading technical discussions, reviewing implementations and maintaining engineering quality standards.
Hands-on experience managing production incidents and supporting live applications.
Formal leadership or management training would be considered a strong advantage.
Nice to Have
Experience with real-time data processing or event-driven architectures.
Previous exposure to digital marketing, tracking or large-scale platform technologies.
